Welcome to Cherniov.com:

The ice over the mystery of the origin of the Chernikov name has been broken!

Dr. Martin Dimnik, has provided us information that has help us make the following summations:

  1. Chernikov is derivative from Chernigov.
  2. Chernigov came into use before written records were kept.
  3. Medieval chronicles, in original language spelling, use a G instead of K; Chernigov instead of Chernikov.
  4. In the 10th-11th Centuries G and K were freely interchanged in oral pronunciation, but not in writing.
  5. Chernikov (with K) is a very early Latinized form of Chernigov, merely a Latinized transliteration of the Cyrillic spelling of Chernigov (before Latinizations became systematized).
  6. There is a possibility of a close connection to pagan sanctuaries (due to archeological evidence) and Rus worship of two main gods - "Chern Bog" and "Bel Bog." Consequently, we have Chernigov and Belgorod on both sides of Kiev.

Martin Dimnik, Professor of Medieval History, Senior Fellow and President Emeritus, Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, Toronto and Professor of Medieval History, University of Toronto most important works are devoted to medieval history of Chernigov. His publications include:

  • The Dynasty of Chernigov, 1146-1246
  • The Dynasty of Chernigov, 1054-1146
  • Mikhail, Prince of Chernigov and Grand Prince of Kiev, 1224-1246

Dr. Dimnik kindly agreed to posting our correspondence on www.chernikov.com, so that all Chernikovs around the globe can appreciate his help in finding out the roots of our name. For a complete record of our exchanges with Professor Martin Dimnik please follow this link.
